The COLOSTRUM event is a MyDC-only event that captures when newborn calves receive colostrum or replacer. Colostrum, the first milk produced by a cow after birth, is high in nutrients and antibodies that provide calves initial protection against disease. Calves need about 2 quarts (2 liters) of colostrum within 4 hours of birth and 1 gallon (4 liters) within 12 hours.

## Event Guidelines

Use the mobile app or the web version of PULSE to enter events! Tap Events in the [mobile app](docId\:W6rLDb6LBQk8JYoUNI2lo) to get started, or see [Add Events](docId\:ybKt2kZTR5IzivGv0Jz2t) to learn more about adding events from web. PULSE supports adding events that have occurred within the last year.

Note the guidelines below when working with the COLOSTRUM event:

- This event can only be added for Lactation 0 animals.
- The system warns you if you attempt to add the event to calves older than 2 days.
- All fields are optional.
- If replacer is used, the system does not prompt for the source of the colostrum.

### Brix value

Brix value is based on a system that uses a refractometer to measure colostral antibodies. PULSE accepts values between 14 and 40. Colostrum with a Brix value above 22 is considered optimal. When the Brix value is below 22, dairies may choose to supplement with colostrum replacer.

## Process Changes

When you add events from web or the mobile app, your updates are sent to PULSE (WiFi or data connection required).

When the updates are received, PULSE records an COLOSTRUM event and sets the EDAY to the date the event was completed or diagnosed.
