<font color="#67854E">**Question**</font>: What is a CAR code and how do I change it?

<font color="#67854E">**Answer**</font>: The **C**ondition **A**ffecting **R**ecord (CAR) code is a disposal code that the DHIA uses to determine why an animal record was disposed and should not be used for sire proofs. It's important to set these codes correctly because a disposal code tells the system why the animal was sold (i.e., culled from the herd) and can be utilized to analyze data on culling decisions.

When you create a SOLD event for an animal, you can manually select the CAR code or DairyComp automatically selects it. If you are interfaced with DHIA, DairyComp automatically sets the CAR code to `6` for a DIED event and `8` for a SOLD event. If you are not interfaced with DHIA, you can select `6` for a DIED event, `8` for a SOLD event, or any other disposal code.

Currently, you can only change CAR codes for SOLD events. Expand the sections below to learn more:

## Change a CAR Code for One Sold Animal

If you need to modify a CAR code for a single animal, delete the existing event and create a new event with the correct CAR code:

1. In the command line, enter **SHOW ID CAR FOR ARDAT=\[date] \D&#x20;**&#x74;o show all animals entered as dead or sold on the date.

You can also use the following commands to view a list of SOLD or DIED animals:
:::

:::Paragraph{listStyleType="disc" indent="2"}
**SHOW ID RPRO REM DCAR FOR RC=7\D**
:::

:::Paragraph{listStyleType="disc" listStart="2" indent="2"}
**SUM BY DCAR\D**
:::

2. Analyze the list to find animals that have an incorrect CAR code.
3. Open the animal's CowCard and go to the **Events** tab.
4. Right-click the SOLD event and select **Erase This Event**.
5. Enter a new SOLD event for the animal using the correct CAR code.

## Add Additional CAR Codes

If you do not use DHIA, you can add additional CAR codes to the **Disposal Codes** list. You can add up to 7 additional CAR codes:

1. Enter the SETUP command and open the **Codes** tab.
2. Double-click on a code that has a number of **0** (zero).
3. In the **Disposal Codes** window, enter a previously unassigned **Code** number and **Description**.
4. Click **OK**.
